3D Environment vs HDRI Dome
VR gives us the ability to digitally build a world that can inspire and compliment the design process. It not only enhances the VR experience, it gives us the ability to interact with the car in ways an HDRI dome will never be able to. Adding levels can give us different perspectives and vantage points that help fully appreciate the design.

An HDRI dome lacks depth and is distracting to the experience. It limits our ability to use the space in a meaningful way. It is merely a distorted background that does nothing to improve the design process or interaction with this new medium.
